The main focus of this board is knowledge from the Bible and knowledge about the Bible. Academic stuff like etymology, philosophy, archaeology, gematria, and bible code are all relevant here.

But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says ‘Fool’ will be sent to fiery hell.

I have heard rumors that Jesus was a black man and thus the entire notion of racism that goes hand in hand with typical racist Aryan beliefs is false. Is this true, /k/?

Of all the people I have asked; they have merely answered with "Jew" as if it were some sort of ethnicity! Those who actually gave a race mentioned Arabic.

Sola Scriptura thread, go.

Sola Scriptura is wrong.

1) The bible was compiled based on Tradition handed down by the first Bishops. Emporer Constantine, after making Christianity legal in Rome, wanted to help standardize Christianity as there were heresies left, right, and centre. The Bible as _Catholics_ know it was then compiled, with the Reformation removing a few Old Testament books.

So we see that Tradition is prior to Scripture and furthermore is the secondary cause of scripture (God being the primary cause, obviously).

2) Sola Scriptura is not supported by Scripture. 2 Timothy 2:16 does not say that "Only Scripture is God-breathed," but that "All Scripture is God-breathed" [NIV, a protestant translation!]. "All Scripture" does not negate things that are not scripture. Furthermore, the 2 Timothy 2:14, two verses directly before the one just quoted, says "continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it."[NIV] He learned from St. Paul. You might say that he learned from the Holy Spirit or Christ, which is true as we all do learn from the Spirit, but Paul speaks in the plural when saying who Timothy learned from, meaning that he learned from more than one person, Paul et al.

3) Without a teaching authority to interpret scriptures, anyone can believe anything they want about the Bible. We can see this clearly in the tens of thousands of protestant denominations running around all with different answers to the same questions. A protestant pastor has to exercise his own right to interpret scripture, but anyone in the congregation who disagrees has to leave, and they thus start their own congregation. The lack of unity in protestantism is evidence that on a purely practical note sola scriptura is mad.

4) Sola Scriptura pre-supposes a thorough understanding of scripture, as anyone can see it is foolish to make an uninformed decision about salvation. But what about before Bibles were mass produced? How could each person, many of whom could not read in the first place, make their own theological, intellectual decisions.

Hey christfans/fans,

Baptist here. I've long wondered what the difference is between some of the major denominations of Christianity. Differences, distinquishing doctrines, customs, traditions, teachings held with greater respect, and so on.

From what I understand, Baptists are distinguishable from other denominations by virtue of the fact that we place a greater emphasis on baptism than any other denomination. Thus, whenever possible, a full-body immersion is preferred for baptism.

Catholics are obvious, with the whole sola scriptura and [whatever the other one is called].

Unfortunately, that's the extent of my knowledge. Could anyone give me quick guides to the core characteristics of any other denominations? Preferably the major ones.

Pic unrelated.

Wikipedia?
>> No. 1152 ID: 92c48c
Yeah, I had a look there. Too wordy. Anyone want to simplify to the most important differences?

Also, a list of some of the more important denominations would be nice.

Alternatively, an explanation of the four categories of denominations as provided on Wikipedia would be helpful: Catholicism (I don't get why Anglican is there, from what I've seen it would be more Protestantism); Protestantism; Orthodoxy; and Nontrinitarian.

Catholics right, everyone else wrong.

To put it simply.

Catholics are those who do these five things:
1) Go to Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation (Christmas, for example)
2) Receive Communion at least once during Easter
3) Confess your sins once a year
4) Observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the church
5) Provide for the material needs of the church (tithing)

Furthermore, Catholics are obligated to believe all things that are in the Deposit of Faith (ranging from the obvious, Christ is God, to the more controversial, Assumption of Mary).

Of course, a Catholic who was not been taught everything in the Deposit of Faith (just about all of us) are not revoked of their Catholic status, but a Catholic who _could_ know something in the Deposit but does not is held responsible.

The doctrine of "Sola Scriptura", or that the Scripture is to the sole authority consulted in Christianity is ironically found no where in the Scripture.

not sure, but i think it has something to do with how the Catholics of the rennaisance were corrupt and corrupting the teachings of Christ. (Indulgences, anyone?)

The lead section of Martin Luther at Wikipedia sums it up best, I think:
Luther's theology challenged the authority of the papacy by holding that the Bible is the only infallible source of religious authority[7] and that all baptized Christians under Jesus are a universal priesthood.[8] According to Luther, salvation is a free gift of God, received only by true repentance and faith in Jesus as the Messiah, a faith given by God and unmediated by the church.

hey guys. I don't really have access to the Bible, but can someone give me a link to the real bible online?

I watched some video on Youtube that there are many versions and I really do not know which one is the correct version.

The reason why I am interested reading in the bible is that I started to believe in Jesus. Ever since I started to believe in him, it feels that I am awake now.

It is kind of hard to explain but when I think about Jesus, I feel real good.

Thank you very much.

I approve of this message.

At first, just try to get a good understanding of the general principles, but don't take anything too literally, because you can't trust the translation. Later, when you want to be sure it says what you think it says about some very specific matter, get as close to the original texts as you can. Hopefully, you'll get to this point fairly quickly in your studies.

i think that, married or no, love making is a beautiful thing and glorifying to God if both people understand fully the meaning of what they're doing. it joins their souls and is an incredibly holy, spiritual act

conversely, wild horny pig sex is not glorifying, and not even marriage is an excuse for it

in short: married or not, love making good, horny pig sex bad

just my two copper

my view on it(not bibles) liquor should be drank in moderation. ya get wasted on some days but never over do it and become a drunk. and if you compleatly avoid it your still letting it run your life. as for abstinence sex wise i dont beleave to much into it. mainly bible teaches to get marryed and then go for it. marriage back in the day was to OWN a women and if they were cought doin stuff befor marrige they were stoned to death. i dont beleave in owning women so i dont beleave in marrage. what i beleave is close to palygamy but polygamy is still owning but multiple women. i beleave its fun and enjoyment and must be taken extreamly serously or youll end up with bad consequences(just like drinking, take moderatly and be coutious). i beleave in being with more then one person but not owning them(kinda best four letter friends). lets face it you may love some one and also have love for another. its been embedded into peoples minds you can only love one and that you should marry them.

>>1186
very true that its spiritual and its an act of trust and closeness but far from bible views. bible proclaims its JUST for creation and its a sin theres nothing holy about it. horny pig sex bad? yes. then you only turn into a compleat hoe. like i said moderation. too much of somthing is bad. every now and then maybe at a party to me its alright. but remember consaquenses always and be prepaired to face them and dont commit the acts if you cant handle the consaquenses(diseases if not carful and pregnet girls)

What do you guys think of the actions and beliefs of the Westboro Baptist Church?

I watched this BBC documentary about them with Louis Theroux and the family and the church members seem like really nice people. Except Fred Phelps himself. He's kind of a Richard.

actualy there right on the money of what the bible teaches. most churches only give the nice segments on the bible(nothing wrong in my eyes on some scriptures). atheists go thrue this kind of hate all the time. there are a very small percent of atheists in this world and when it seems that theyv become extreamly hatful towerds beleavers you can thank christians like this who follow the bible strictly like it says to.

>>568
i take it very seriously!!! why? becouse many gays are killed and disowned by there own famlys(gose for atheists too). if it continues to grow and they keep following the bible like it says to it'll only be a matter of time till us atheists have to go underground again. the bible says to kill people like us and that god will never forgive those who blastphameth him in this life or the next. im pretty shure just about all the fed up atheist have said somthing blastphameth. so when i die my famly will suffer more when they show up to my funeral and say how im going to hell. i can give the scriptures if requested i dont blame you if you dont beleave me. i have no problem in people beleaving in a god but to worship and follow one such as this one i do have a problem with. i myself have been disowned by my famly becouse i gave them scriptures when they argued with me being an atheist and they didnt want to beleave they beleaved in a brutal hateful god. to them i was evil and couldnt live my life a good person without christianity.
>> No. 1212 ID: c40300
oh by the way i thank those of you christians that dont partake in this kind of hate mongraling. your the reason why i still try to give respect to those who follow it
even if i disagree. i understand not all worship and follow the bible the same way. and i also thank that you put up with angry atheist that might attack what you beleave not couse you said somthing but other followers did.

I just had the most amazing feeling...and then it was gone, just like that. My friend was explaining to me about the Trinity and how it works, and all of a sudden I felt like I understood everything about the universe and unexplainable joy. Everything he was saying was barely noticeable, and then I came back to reality and couldn't grasp that understanding anymore. I tried desperately to find it again, but it's just like those times when you try to remember a name, and you're so close to it, but it's out of reach.

If I ever had any doubts of God existing, they are completely obliterated now.
I feel so happy right now...wow, that feeling has got to be better than any drug that could ever be made.

I got introduced to church speradically as a kid. Not use if it was that or what, but I can rememeber being 9-ish and trying to explain to my Dad and brother this feeling of absolute greatness (kinda like I could just almost reach for it). Good stuff man.
